The Actors Studio at Rooftop Lot 10, Nadi Baru Kuala Lumpur


Sebuah bandar tidak wajar kehilangan nyawanya. Jati diri budaya merupakan udara untuknya terus bernafas. Dengan terbinanya The Actors Studio at Rooftop Lot 10, segitiga emas Kuala Lumpur akan terus bernyawa. Itulah antara kata-kata yang diluahkan oleh Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, pemilik gergasi korporat YTL Corporations. “Bandaraya akan hilang jatidirinya jika budaya tidak disuburkan. Budayalah yang menjadi nafas untuk sesebuah bandaraya terus bernyawa.”

Selepas penutupan mengejut operasi di Bangsar Shopping Centre, The Actors Studio bernyawa kembali. Pada hari Sabtu lalu berlangsung Malam Gala Pembukaan “The Actors Studio at Rooftop Lot 10”.

Saya boleh meletakkannya sebagai sebuah lokasi yang paling strategik untuk sebuah teater. Memang telah lama saya impikan agar Kuala Lumpur memiliki pentas teaternya bukan di pinggir bandar tetapi sebaliknya di tengah-tengah bandar Kuala Lumpur.

The Actors Studio diasaskan pada April 1989 oleh pasangan suami isteri, Joe Hafsham dan Datuk Faridah Merican. Lokasi pertama syarikat teater paling berpengerah itu dibuka di Dataran Merdeka pada 1995.

Pasangan itu terus gigih membudayakan masyarakat setempat sehinggalah terbukanya lokasi mereka yang kedua iaitu di Bangsar pada 2001. Tidak henti di situ, mereka melebarkan sayap mereka ke utara dan cawangan The Actors Studio di buka di Pulau Pinang setahun kemudian.
Malangnya pada 10 Jun 2003, banjir besar memusnahkan cawangan Plaza Putra. Namun itu tidak mematahkan semangat Faridah dan Joe walaupun pelbagai dugaan yang mereka terima.

The Actors Studio tidak akan mati. Itulah janji Datuk Faridah Merican demi cintanya pada seni persembahan. Bermula semalam, The Actors Studio at Rooftop Lot 10 membuka pintu menerima pengunjung.


Lokasi asal The Actors Studio di Plaza Putra musnah apabila banjir melanda Dataran Merdeka pada 10 Jun 2003. Sementara cawangannya di Bangsar Shopping Centre pula ditutup pada 28 Februari lalu.

Walaupun diduga pelbagai musibah, namun selaku pengasas, Faridah dan suaminya Joe Hafsham percaya jenama The Actors Studio akan terus memperkasakan budaya kepada rakyat tempatan.

Segitiga emas Kuala Lumpur kini memiliki sebuah panggung teater yang pastinya akan menarik tumpuan pelancong untuk melihat sendiri budaya tempatan di depan mata mereka. Pelbagai hotel yang terdapat di situ pastinya dipenuhi pelancong yang bakal menjadi fokus utama untuk menjadi penonton di pentas itu.

Dicop sebagai “West End of Kuala Lumpur”, The Actors Studio at Rooftop Lot 10 dibuka secara percuma mulai 11 hingga 18 Oktober ini sebelum memulakan operasinya seperti biasa.

Istana Budaya 10 Tahun

Menerajui seni pementasan di Malaysia, hari ini Istana Budaya menyambut ulang tahunnya yang ke sepuluh.

Berkat harapan warga seni Malaysia sejak tahun 1971, maka tersergam indah kompleks Istana Budaya yang mula dibangunkan pada tahun 1995.

Dengan kos pembiayaan sebanyak RM210 juta, Istana Budaya yang mempunyai keluasan 5.44 hektar serta keluasan lantai 21 ribu meter persegi, dibanggakan sebagai panggung pertama di Asia yang memiliki mekanisme pentas tercanggih untuk pementasan teater.

Majlis perasmian disempurnakan oleh Perdana Menteri Malaysia ke empat, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed pada 15 September 1999 dalam satu majlis penuh gilang gemilang istiadat Kesultanan Melayu.

Selesai majlis perasmian, Perdana Menteri bersama tetamu kehormat turut menyaksikan pementasan teater Keris Sang Puteri.

Teater arahan Datuk Rahim Razali dipilih sebagai teater “Buka Panggung” pentas berprestij itu.

Setakat ini, pelbagai produksi telah dipentaskan seperti Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical, Konsert Eksklusif Satu Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Konsert Alam M.Nasir, Teater Ronggeng Rokiah dan banyak lagi.

Ini tidak termasuk produksi antarabbangsa seperti Mamma Mia, Chang & Eng, Fame dan Cats.

Terletak berhampiran Tasik Titiwangsa di Jalan Tun Razak, kini bangunan bercirikan budaya Melayu itu menjadi tarikan utama penggiat seni pentas tempatan dan antarabangsa.

Nota : Pelbagai jenis pementasan dan persembahan telah saya saksikan bermula dengan Keris Sang Puteri di hari pertama pembukaannya kepada penonton, beberapa hari sebelum ia dirasmikan.

Antara teater yang paling saya ingati dan telah tonton beberapa kali ialah Ronggeng Rokiah, Siti Zubaidah, Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical dan P.Ramlee The Musical. Produksi tersebut merupakan antara produksi yang mampu menggerakkan saya untuk bertandang ke Istana Budaya lebih daripada sekali. PGL The Musical dan P.Ramlee The Musical antara yang banyak sekali saya tonton. Selain menjadi penonton, saya terlibat dalam produksi tersebut sebagai Webmaster. Itu cerita dulu.

Banyak juga pementasan yang saya ingati seperti Cats, Fame, Saturday Night Fever dan Mamma Mia yang bersifat antarabangsa produksinya. Selain kagum dengan mutu produksi banyak yang boleh dipelajari daripada cara kerja produksi tersebut selain menggunapakai teknik yang mereka guna.

Saya tidak ketinggalan menyaksikan The Merchant Of Bollywood, Opera Turandot, Siti Di Alam Fantasi, Tun Perak, Cindai, Member Of The Club, Mohram, Gema Zafana, Roshomon, Alang Rentak Seribu, Konsert Geeta Gangsa, Lantai T.Pinkie dan banyak lagi.

Akan menyusul Oktober ini ialah pementasan Teater Gamat dan Cuci The Musical. Syabas Istana Budaya.

Tiara Tinggalkan Pentas PGL

Selepas lebih tujuh tahun menghambakan dirinya kepada watak Gusti Puteri Raden Adjeng Retno Dumilah…

Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina melunaskan janjinya untuk memberikan persembahan terbaiknya yang juga persembahan terakhirnya malam tadi.

Bertempat di Panggung Sari Istana Budaya, Tiara melafazkan dialog terakhirnya dengan penuh emosi.

“kuhinakan diriku sendiri untuk merengkuh cinta sejati. Cintamu bagai cahaya mentari yang membakar wajahku. Meski sekilas kurasakan, namun akan menjadi bekal sehingga ke akhir zaman.”

Namun beliau berjaya mengawal perasaannya sewaktu berlakon di samping Stephen Rahman-Hughes yang berperanan sebagai Hang Tuah.

Sedih meninggalkan “teman baik”nya itu, Tiara memegang peranan tersebut sejak versi filem Puteri Gunung Ledang yang ditayangkan pada tahun 2004.

“Tak pecaya…dah berakhir sudah perjalanan saya sebagai Puteri. This is the best experience yang tidak akan saya lupakan seumur hidup saya. Malam ini saya dapat rasakan kasih sayang yang diberikan oleh penonton yang tidak pernah saya dapat sebelum ini. Sukar sangat untuk menanyi tanpa breaking down. Ia merupakan malam yang sukar buat saya. Alhamdulillah, saya survived.”

Versi muzikal berdasarkan filem itu mula dipentaskan pada Februari 2006 di Istana Budaya sebelum dipentaskan semula di pentas bertaraf antarabangsa itu pada Ogos tahun yang sama dan dibawa ke The Esplanade Singapura pada November 2006.

Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical merupakan pemenang 8 anugerah di BOH Cameronian Arts Awards tahun 2006.

Mendedikasikan kejayaan pementasan musim ini kepada peminat seni teater Malaysia, beliau tidak melupakan sokongan padu yang diberikan oleh suaminya, Datuk Seri Effendi Nawawi.

“Saya dedikasikan kejayaan pementasan musim ini kepada penonton dan penyokong Puteri Gunung Ledang dan kepada semua yang telah mewarnai hidup saya selama ini setelah berbelas tahun saya dalam industri ini.”

Sambil berharap teater muzikal itu akan terus dipentaskan hingga 50 tahun akan datang, beliau masih belum membuat sebarang keputusan untuk projeknya yang akan datang.

Namun demikian, Gala TV difahamkan beliau akan mementaskan semula sebuah filem penyiasatan yang judulnya masih dirahsiakan.//

7th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards Nominees by Kakiseni

Majlis pengumuman calon untuk 7th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards berlangsung malam tadi di Bangsar. Seperti yang diinginkan oleh ramai penonton, teater arahan Jo Kukathas dan Zalfian Fuzi mendominasi pencalonan dengan 8 pencalonan. Naskhah nukilan Shahnon Shah itu akan dipentaskan kembali di KLPAC bulan April depan, sebulan sebelum majlis anugerah ini berlangsung.

Walaupun sedikit terkilan kerana P.Ramlee The Musical Season 2 tidak layak untuk dicalonkan, namun pencalonan AirCon sedikit sebanyak menghilangkan rasa terkilan itu. Tahniah untuk produksi AirCon.

Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical Season 3 : Menongkah Gelombang Mencipta Sejarah

Lebih lima bulan lalu, Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina menerusi produksinya Enfiniti Productions mengumumkan akan mementaskan kembali teater muzikal Puteri Gunung Ledang. Sejak hari itu saya menghitung hari menantikan tibanya 6 Februari 2009. Walaupun saya telah berpuluh kali menonton teater tersebut sejak musim pertama dan keduanya di Kuala Lumpur hinggalah ke pementasan di Esplanade Singapura, saya tidak pernah puas menontonnya.

Sejak beberapa bulan ini kita sering membaca atau pun menonton publisiti yang disiarkan di akhbar mahu pun promo di televisyen. Dari cerita perubahan yang bakal dilakukan dalam pementasan kali ini, cerita tentang elemen ilusi yang pertama kali digunakan dalam teater Malaysia sehinggalah kepada berita mengejut pengunduran Tiara sebagai Puteri.

Setiap kali jugalah saya memikirkan apakah perubahan yang mahu dilakukan kepada pementasan yang sememangnya sudah cantik, sudah menang banyak anugerah dan yang sudah sememangnya sebati dengan rakyat Malaysia. Adakalanya saya terfikir mengapa perlunya diubah sesuatu yang sudah cukup baik tetapi apabila memikirkan produksi ini saya tidak hairan sekiranya mereka akan melakukan sesuatu yang berbeza.

Sehinggalah satu hari saya mendengar sendiri dari mulut Tiara, Ida Marina dan Chedd mengenai perubahan yang akan dilakukan. Saya begitu teruja kerana perancangan yang diatur sangat hebat. Bayangkan sebuah teater Melayu cuba untuk bermain dengan ilusi di atas pentas seperti yang pernah dipentaskan oleh Wicked atau pun Lord Of The Rings The Musical di Broadway atau pun West End. Puteri hilang di atas pentas, perubahan Nenek Kebayan kepada Puteri, kemurkaan Sultan dan macam-macam lagi.

Akhirnya, hari itu tiba dan saya menontonnya semalam. Pementasan malam tadi sebenarnya “full run-through” atau pun latihan penuh, namun demikian Panggung Sari, Istana Budaya penuh sesak dengan penonton.

Perubahan dan Penambahan Secukup Rasa

Beberapa adegan yang paling saya suka dalam pementasan sebelum ini diperkemaskan. Adegan Janji Dan Ikatan 2 Kerajaan kali ini diperhebatkan lagi dengan persembahan tarian Jawa oleh Puteri dan penari kepada rombongan Melaka. Kalau dulu segmen tarian agak pendek tetapi kali ini lebih panjang dan gerak tari diperkemaskan. Lagi pun tenaga pengajar yang dibawa khas dari Kraton Mangku nagara iaitu Mbak Kur yang pernah menjadi tenaga pengajar kepada Tiara sewaktu menghasilkan filem Puteri Gunung Ledang.

Penambahan Mimpi dan Penantian juga agak menarik. Di sini Puteri mengimbas kembali apa yang pernah diperkatakan oleh abangnya Adipati, pengasuhnya Bayan, Sultan Mahmud dan Datuk Laksamana Hang Tuah membulatkan tekadnya untuk pergi ke Melaka menjejak kekasihnya Hang Tuah.

Persiapan Puteri juga mengejutkan kerana Bayan menyembunyikan Puteri dari pandangan dan ditangkap untuk dibawa menghadap Adipati. Di sini elemen ilusi digunakan. Jangan tanya saya bagaimana Puteri hilang kerana tidak akan ada seorang ahli silap mata pun yang akan membuka rahsia mereka.

Bercakap tentang elemen ilusi saya agak skeptikal pada mulanya, takut-takut elemen itu digunakan dengan keterlaluan lalu pementasan menjadi seperti sarkis. Namun tanggapan itu salah bila setiap elemen ilusi dibuat kena pada tempatnya dan tidak keterlaluan. Anslem Roy tidak “over-do” it ! Fantastic !

Adegan Pelayaran Puteri digahkan dengan bahtera yang lebih besar dari pementasan terdahulu. Set bahtera berlayar lengkap dengan pergerakan dilambung ombak. Sekali lagi saya tergamam dan mata saya tidak berkelip. Pementasan berhenti rehat tetapi mulut tidak berhenti bercakap sewaktu menunggu waktu rehat tamat. Sungguh hebat pementasan kali ini.

Babak 2 bermula dengan Melaka yang lebih baik susunan muziknya yang bermula dengan gabungan muzik tradisional Melayu seperti zapin, dondang sayang dan joget sebelum menjadi lebih rancak dan moden. Saya fikir ia sesuatu yang lebih menarik berbanding musim lepas kerana di sinilah letaknya kreativiti pengarah muzik untuk mengindahkan lagi muzik yang ada. Susunan muzik yang dihasilkan oleh Roslan Aziz tidak perlu saya pertikaikan. Hasilnya amat baik sekali.

Sekali lagi saya kagum dengan kehebatan Adlin Aman Ramlie bila mana kali ini sebagai Sultan Mahmud dia menari bersama ensemble. Adlin tidak menari bersama sewaktu pementasan di Kuala Lumpur, cuma sewaktu PGL dipentaskan di Esplanade Singapura Adlin menari bersama-sama. Elemen Broadway disuntik dalam watak Sultan dan itu pastinya disukai oleh saya. Saya tidak kisah kalau Sultan yang selama ini sepatutnya diletakkan di tahap yang tertinggi, kali ini diberikan mood yang berbeza. Ada ketika Adlin berjenaka. Memandang ini hanyalah sebuah teater muzikal, saya terima dengan terbuka. Sememangnya Adlin pukul habis dengan menari kali ini.

Adegan Nenek Kebayan diberikan sentuhan ilusi. Nenek Kebayan boleh hilang dan muncul di tempat lain untuk mengelirukan rombongan Hang Tuah ke Gunung Ledang. Set Gunung Ledang lebih tinggi kali ini dan diletakkan lebih ke depan dan dekat dengann penonton bahagian depan. Saya mengetahui yang Nenek Kebayan itu sebenarnya Puteri dan kali ini transformasi dua watak itu lebih menjadi. Dari Nenek Kebayan menjadi Puteri sekelip mata. Sekali lagi ilusi digunakan.

Namun perubahan yang paling saya suka ialah Konfrontasi Puteri Dan Sultan. Ia merupakan kemuncak teater tersebut. Sultan Melaka dan Puteri Gunung Ledang berada pada tahap terbaik. Jika pementasan dulu saya melihat kesombongan Puteri masih tebal dalam diri Tiara yang mana beliau hanya berdiri sambil Sultan Melaka melafazkan sumpahnya. Kali ini Puteri lebih tunduk kepada Sultan. Konfrontasi antara mereka benar-benar menjadi. Lakonan mereka hebat. Lebih-lebih lagi lakonan Tiara apabila beliau sanggup dimalukan semata-mata kerana cinta.

Selepas dua tahun tidak menyentuh skrip tersebut, mereka memberikan terjemahan baru kepada skrip tersebut. Saya anggap lakonan Tiara berada di tahap terbaik dalam musim ini apabila adegan ini diwujudkan. Cinta membuatkannya sanggup untuk diperlakukan sedemikian. Apakah sedemikian yang saya maksudkan, anda patut tonton sendiri.

Adegan tersebut membuatkan penonton terdiam menyaksikan sendiri lakonan terbaik oleh dua pelakon itu. Tiara membenarkan dirinya diserap watak Puteri dalam pementasan musim ini. Seorang Puteri yang mencari cinta sejati seorang bernama Hang Tuah. Dan kerana cinta beliau sanggup melakukan apa saja termasuk menjunjung daulat seorang Sultan.

Saya geleng kepala tonton adegan tersebut. Amat berpuas hati dan berkata kalaulah adegan itu wujud dalam pementasan musim pertama sudah pasti Tiara membawa pulang anugerah Pelakon Terbaik di BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. Memang jauh bezanya aura Puteri yang dibawa oleh Tiara di musim ini. Lebih puas menontonnya lebih-lebih lagi bila Stephen Rahman-Hughes sudah semakin sebati dengan bahasa Melayu dan geraknya lahir semulajadi. Gabungan Tiara dan Stephen amat menjadi musim ini. Lakonan kedua-duanya lebih natural. Dan yang paling penting Tiara menamatkan lakonan berhantunya dengan watak Puteri Gunung Ledang dengan cemerlang ! Syabas Dato’ Zahim !

Kepada penganjur BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, please consider Tiara for BOH CAA Lifetime Achievement Award and reconsider to include Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical Season 3 for nomination in 2009 shortlisted performance for another year.

Cuma ada satu sahaja yang kurang saya suka iaitu kostum Hang Tuah yang nampak agak tenggelam dalam kemewahan kostum bermotif songket kumpulan ensemble. Kostum Hang Tuah kurang menyerlah sebagai seorang Laksamana. Lain daripada itu, baik arahan, lakonan, muzik, set, koreografi, kostum, tatacahaya, bunyi, ensemble, kesan visual, elemen ilusi dan solekan saya kagum dengan kehebatan mereka.

Saya kagum dengan produksi pementasan ini yang bekerja keras mahu mengangkat martabat teater Malaysia dan hasilnya amat di luar dugaan. Sebagai anak Malaysia saya bangga kerana masa depan teater Malaysia semakin bersinar dan produksi ini telah meletakkan tanda aras yang baru untuk teater Malaysia. Perjuangan untuk penggiat teater Malaysia belum selesai kerana mereka harus mencapai standard yang telah ditetapkan oleh Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical.

Saya akan menonton lagi malam ini, malam esok (malam media), malam gala (bersama YDP Agong & Permaisuri Agong) dan satu malam lagi bersama keluarga. Jika anda masih belum mendapatkan tiket untuk menyaksikan pementasan Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical, pastikan anda mendapatkannya segera.
